A Case of Delayed Facial Nerve Palsy After Tympanoplasty Type I

Abstract
Delayed facial nerve palsy following tympanoplasty is an uncommon events, and is defined to develope several hours to several days after surgery. The pathogenesis of delayed facial nerve palsy is not known clearly, but it is presumed to neuronal edema following surgical trauma, bacterial infection and reactivation of virus. In most cases, the function of facial nerve was returned completely. Authors recently experienced a cases of left side delayed facial nerve palsy following left tympanoplasty type I. The patient was a 38 years old woman with complaint of left facial palsy for 3 days. Facial palsy was developed on 11th postoperative day and the initial House-Brackmann grade was ¥³. Partial recovery was done promptly after packing removal and complete return of function was achieved in three weeks. So authors report this case with the review of the literature.
